Gaza Onslaught

Hamas resistance movement has praised the “principled and courageous” position of African leaders concerning the Israeli onslaught on the besieged Gaza Strip, and their vehement opposition to the atrocious campaign against the Palestinians there.

During the 38th African Union Summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Sunday, African Union (AU) leaders issued a strong condemnation of Israeli atrocities in Gaza, urging member states to halt cooperation and normalization with the Tel Aviv regime.

Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians and must be prosecuted internationally, the summit’s final statement read.

“We call for an end to cooperation and normalization with Israel until it ends its occupation and aggression against Palestine,” the communiqué pointed out.

Hamas said in a statement that it “commends the final statement of the African Union summit, and the principled and courageous position of member states in condemning the brutal Zionist war on Gaza, and rejecting the regime’s violations of the international law.”

The Gaza-based movement praised the communiqué for condemning the genocide against Palestinians, and its call for prosecution of the Zionist regime at international courts and cessation of all forms of cooperation and normalization with the occupying regime until it renounces occupation and aggression against Palestinians.

amas described the position of African countries to be a natural continuation of the continent's history of struggle against colonialism and oppression, and their adherence to the values of freedom, justice, and the right to self-determination.

It emphasized that such a strong stance demonstrates support for the resilience of Palestinians against the crimes of the occupying Israeli regime, and sends a clear message to the international community that they must honor their obligations to stop the Zionist entity's aggression and prosecute its criminal leaders.

Hamas finally called on African countries to take concrete steps by increasing political and legal pressures on Israel, supporting the Palestinian cause in international forums and strengthening Palestinians’ steadfastness until freedom is achieved and an independent Palestinian state is established with al-Quds as its capital.

Backed by the United States and its Western allies, Israel launched the war on Gaza after Hamas and other Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movements carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the Israeli regime in response to its decades-long campaign of oppression against Palestinians.

Israel's genocidal war on Gaza has led to the death of at least 48,271 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injury of 111,693 others since early October 2023.

A ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement went into effect in Gaza on January 19, halting Israel's aggressive campaign against the coastal region.

1,000 Settler Units

Israeli authorities have issued a tender to build hundreds of new settler units in the West Bank, irrespective of the international outcry against the Tel Aviv regime’s land grab policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.

According to the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now, the tender is for constructing 974 additional housing units in the Efrat settlement south of Bethlehem.

It warned that the construction of an entire neighborhood in the Efrat settlement expands the settlement by 644 dunams, and will increase the number of illegal settlers there by approximately 40 percent.

The Israeli rights group said the new Israeli neighborhood blocks the development of an envisaged Bethlehem metropolis to the south, and if Israel seeks to annex the area, it will cut off the entire southern West Bank.

While the residents of the occupied territories set their sights on the release of captives and an end to the Gaza war, the Netanyahu cabinet is operating ‘on steroids’ to establish facts on the ground that will destroy the chance for peace and compromise, Peace Now said.

Nineteen Israeli captives and five Thai workers have been released in exchange for 1,135 Palestinian prisoners under a Gaza ceasefire agreement that took effect on January 19.

More than 700,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the West Bank and East al-Quds.

The international community views the settlements as illegal under international law and the Geneva Conventions due to their construction on occupied territories.

The UN Security Council has condemned Israel’s settlement activities in several resolutions.

Any Peace Deal

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says Israel’s establishment of seven new settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank proves the regime should not be trusted for any peace deal.

"The establishment of these settlement outposts and communities on lands classified as Area B in the West Bank, which fall under the administrative control of the Palestinian Authority, reaffirms the failure of relying on peace settlement options with the occupation," the Tuesday statement read.

"It underscores the need to confront its criminal policies aimed at erasing the Palestinian presence on their land and its relentless efforts to displace the people of the West Bank,” Hamas stated.

Hamas also cited a report by Israeli human rights organization Peace Now, which revealed that Israeli occupying authorities had established at least seven new settlement outposts on Palestinian-owned land.

This, according to Hamas, is part of the occupation regime’s ongoing plans to annex and Judaize the area, in blatant violation of international resolutions and laws that criminalize settlement activity.

Far-right Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, a close ally of Benjamin Netanyahu, recently urged the regime to take “control” of the Gaza Strip and adopt an “offensive” approach in the occupied West Bank to expand illegal settlements and block the creation of a Palestinian state.

Soft War

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei meets with a thousands-strong group of people from the northwestern Iranian province of East Azerbaijan in the capital Tehran on February 17, 2025

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said efforts by the Iranian nation’s enemies to shake the people’s resolve and sow discord among them by waging soft threats against them have failed to produce result.

”The massive march of the nation on February 10th showed that the enemy's software threats have been ineffective against this country and this nation,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in the capital Tehran on Monday, the anniversary of a historic and influential uprising by the people of the province’s capital Tabriz, which played a pivotal role in the success of the country's historic 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The Leader was pointing to the nation’s monumental turnout in the marches and celebrations that marked the 45th anniversary of the Revolution, which overthrew the country’s former United States-backed tyrannical Pahlavi regime.

“Software threats mean manipulating the public opinion; it means creating division; it means creating doubt in the fundamental principles of the Islamic Revolution; it means creating doubt about steadfastness against the enemy. They are doing this.” Ayatollah Khamenei stated.

“By God's grace [however], they have not succeeded until today; until today, the enemy’s temptations have not been able to shake the hearts of our people or deter our youths from their resolve and moving [forward],” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei again cited the case of the extensive commemoration events that took place during the anniversary of the Revolution’s victory this year.

“Where else in the world does such a thing exist? After forty-some years since the victory of the Revolution, on the anniversary of the Revolution’s victory, the entire nation, not the Armed Forces, not the officials, but the masses of the people, honor the day in such a way and enter the field with such a massive turnout, despite all the problems that exist.”

“What does this mean? It means that the enemy's software threats have not been effective in this country and on this nation until today,” the Leader stated.

Ayatollah Khamenei advised the people functioning within the country’s media industry, including broadcast apparatuses, authors, knowledgeable figures, cyberspace specialists, and authorities serving the education, science, and arts sectors across the nation as well as the country’s youths to “focus their efforts on confronting the enemy's software threats.”

The Leader commended the country’s sufficient capability to fend off the enemies’ “hardware threats,” noting, “Today, we have no concerns or issues regarding hard defense and the enemy's hardware threats.”

“Our ability to counter hard threats is at an excellent level, and the people feel secure in this regard.”

Elsewhere during the speech, the Leader acknowledged that the Iranian people had some legitimate problems and expectations.

The predicaments, though, do not prevent the people from defending their Revolution, Ayatollah Khamenei underlined.

‘World’s arrogant powers, colonialists outraged by Iranian steadfastness’

Ayatollah Khamenei, meanwhile, identified “the reason for the anger of the [world’s] arrogant powers and colonialists towards the Islamic Republic” as “the steadfastness and resistance of the Iranian people.”

The Leader was pointing to the nation’s unfaltering march towards the country’s betterment and welfare in the face of illegal economic sanctions and mounting political pressure by the US and its allies.

The Leader also hailed the Islamic Revolution for having managed to maintain and preserve itself as an “independent identity” and a “vast and hopeful base for the peoples of the region and even beyond the region."

Earl B Micky - Rockin'

Man, in his technological advancement, is advancing, but not according to the active Will of God, but, instead, by the permissive Will of God. Man’s technology needs to be perfected, but it’s going to take a righteous scientist to perfect the work of unrighteous scientists. It’s going to take a righteous Nation to correct the wickedness of this present world.

There’s a verse in the Bible that says: “Behold, I make all things new.” It says, ‘There will be a new heaven and a new Earth, and the former things shall pass away.” The Honorable Elijah Muhammad taught us that it meant that there was corruption in the political system and corruption in the religious system.

And because corruption has been in the political and the religious spheres, the people suffer because of corrupt leadership. Muslim political leaders have adopted ideologies and philosophies that may not necessarily be in harmony with the Teachings of the Prophet or the Teachings of the Holy Qur’an.

Religious leaders—imams and sheikhs—have come up under these political leaders and they have preached a watered-down Islam for fear of persecution by the political leaders who have gone astray from the Teachings of the Holy Prophet. Let’s agree with truth.

My brother that spoke before me mentioned that he was a Sunni Muslim. His brother is an Ishmaeli Muslim, and I’m sure we’re among Sufi scholars who have tried to dig very deeply into the esoteric meanings of the Qur’an. But I have never seen that name “Sunni” or “Sufi” or “Hanbali” or “Hanafi” or “Shia” in the Holy Qur’an.

Prophet Abraham didn’t say, “Make me a Sunni.” He didn’t say to Allah (God), “Make me a Sufi.” He said, “Make us submissive to Thee and from our offspring, raise up a nation submissive to Thee.” The Qur’an says, “They did not become divided until after revelation came to them, splitting up their religion into sects and parties, each one rejoicing in what they had due to envy.”

We must deal with this because the Umma (community) of the Prophet is one Umma. It’s not saying that you can’t be Sufi and a Muslim, or Sunni and a Muslim, but you must not exalt your specific difference over the Umma. You must subordinate your specific idea to the oneness of the community.

If you fail to do this, then you and I are guilty of working for Shaitan (Satan) to divide the Muslim Umma, brother against brother, due to our faulty interpretation or understanding of the Qur’an and the Prophet and His Way, Peace Be Upon Him.

We have to admit that Allah (God) Chose the Arabs, and their condition was deplorable. And do you remember in Surah Abasa (80th Chapter of the Qur’an titled “He Frowned”), the Prophet was speaking to some highly placed people and a blind man was tapping his way up to the Prophet and disturbed his conversation.

The Prophet frowned because he evidently was getting his point over and this man interrupted him. And then Allah revealed this Surah titled “Abasa” or “He Frowned” and He says: “He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him. And what would make thee know that he might purify himself or be mindful so the reminder should profit him.

As for him who considers himself free from need, to him thou dost attend. And no blame is on thee if he purify himself not, and as to him who comes to thee striving hard and he fears, to him thou payest no regard. Nay, surely it is a reminder so let him who will mind it.”

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) united the Arabs and the Arabs brought the message of Islam to the whole world. Yet, the Holy Prophet in his Hadith said, “The sun that rises from the East, you will see it rising from the West.” Did he mean that the (physical) sun, 853,000 miles in diameter, was going to rise from the West?

Or did he mean that the light of Wisdom that has always come out of the East and shone westward, that in the last days of the world a light would come out of the West that would shine back eastward.

Then Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] said he heard the footsteps of Bilal going into paradise ahead of his own. What did he mean? Do you think that Bilal (a Black man who was the caller to prayer) could enter Paradise ahead of the Prophet Himself?

I don’t think so. Nobody goes ahead of the Prophet. He makes the way for us. I believe he was saying that his community, entrusted with the responsibility of spreading the message, fell victim to Shaitan (Satan) and started attending to those who felt free of need.

Trump’s Gaza ‘takeover’

The Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have condemned in the strongest terms U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks on the “takeover” of the Gaza Strip.

In a statement released on Feb. 5, the Arab League’s secretariat said such a move was “a recipe for instability” and would be in “violation of international law.”

The 22-member regional bloc said Trump’s proposal promotes the “displacement of Palestinians, which is rejected on the Arab and international levels.”

Trump has said the United States should ”take over” the Gaza Strip, expelling its people to other countries.

---

He made the remarks during a White House news conference on Feb. 4 with the visiting Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump’s plan for the Gaza Strip has already sparked international condemnation. It has faced resounding rejection among Palestinians, West Asian leaders and governments around the world.

UN rights chief Volker Turk has said in response to Trump’s remarks that international law was ”very clear” that “any forcible transfer in or deportation of people from occupied territory is strictly prohibited.”

OIC denounces Trump’s call to displace Palestinians

The OIC, which represents more than 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, in a separate statement expressed its absolute rejection of any plans aimed at changing the geographical, demographic, or legal reality of the occupied Palestinian territory.

The organization believes the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the State of Palestine.

The Trump plan “contributes to the consolidation of the occupation, colonial settlement, and the seizure of Palestinian land by force, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the principles of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions,” the OIC said.

The OIC called for “the complete withdrawal of the Israeli occupation, strengthening the steadfastness of the Palestinians in their land and their safe return to their homes.”

The organization reiterated its support for East al-Quds as the capital of a future Palestinian state, underscoring its “Arab and Islamic character.”

Elsewhere in the statement, the OIC called for ensuring accountability for all crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people during the campaign of genocide in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Africa first

Looking at the over 200 executive orders US President Donald Trump signed on his first day back in office, you can see that nothing at all connects his policy directions toward Africa. This is a clear reflection of the strategic direction of US foreign policy under the MAGA Republicans.

However, African leaders need to take cognizance of the following outcomes from the American president’s executive orders: 1) on energy security; 2) on the protection of the US as the preserver of currency of international trade; 3) on trade and tariffs.

All three orders directly connect to African politics in international affairs.

Energy security and climate

For instance, the executive order on energy security effectively put America in the mood of a national energy emergency. It tends to condemn all the extreme climate-driven, anti-fossil fuel policies by withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement through the drill-baby-drill rhetoric.

This will put Trump’s energy policy in confrontation many African countries that ratified the Paris Climate Agreement. Practically all 54 African countries have signed the Paris Agreement and most of them have ratified Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The US has traditionally used the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as a bargaining chip to ensure complete compliance with the new climate diplomatic regime. In exchange for international aid and development programs, African countries are expected to comply.

The EU and the US have over time convinced Africans to enact legislation and establish frameworks and models to ensure compliance with the ratified climate change agreement. With Trump’s complete withdrawal from the accord, it means that African countries that rushed to ratify this agreement may have to either rollback the progress made on this front for them to continue to ally with the US, or remain within the framework and face the obvious backlash from the new US energy policy.

African policymakers should have listened to the Global South’s views on climate change and adopted a slow but steady approach, not rush into a venture that will turn out to be unprofitable, as it is now. For instance, Russian President Vladimir Putin has long doubted the extreme measures taken by the Western world’s climate change policies. President Putin’s evolving views on the subject of climate change and global energy security have turned out to be  true, by the current assertion of the new energy emergency enacted by the Trump administration.

Trump’s executive order on National Energy Emergency includes a wide range of provisions intended to “unleash America’s affordable and reliable energy and natural resources.” This ends the Biden administration’s pause on approvals for new LNG exports. It also starts processes for easing regulations on oil and gas production, scrapping appliance efficiency standards, and changing regulations that encourage sales of electric vehicles.

The new policy will reshape the African energy market significantly. Would Africa be a competitor to the US?

In 2023, Africa exported a combined value of 5 million barrels of oil, mostly to India, Spain, France, the US, and the Netherlands, the same markets the Trump Administration is planning to target for its energy exports. If the energy policy advocated by the Trump administration expanded the scope of oil exploration by the US, which currency serves as the largest energy exporter in the world, then the African energy market might likely be in open competition with the US.

Dollar protection

On the protection of the dollar, Trump hopes his administration’s executive order on cryptocurrency will help in organizing American digital assets, including the dollar, effectively maintaining its global dominance in international transactions as the currency of choice.

The order focuses on promoting US leadership in blockchain, digital assets and other emerging financial technologies, including cryptocurrency. It emphasizes various points about US leadership in digital asset and financial technology, as well as changes in several previous US policy directives over actions in these sectors.

Key policies include: ensuring access to open public blockchain networks for lawful purposes; promoting the US dollar’s sovereignty through lawful dollar-backed stablecoins; ensuring fair access to banking services; providing regulatory clarity with technology-neutral regulations; protecting against the risks of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) by prohibiting their establishment and use in the US.

While believing that this policy is futuristic and a masterpiece, the US is late to the party. Not just because of the time-lapse wasted on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies of the Biden administration, but the simple fact that it was an individualistic effort to create a global financial technology. The BRICS countries were far ahead in this program.

From the last BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, the partnership between BitRiver and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) aims to create crypto and AI data centers across BRICS nations, enhancing computing power and reducing reliance on Western technology. This was not just theoretical – it has been practiced between Russia and Iran, Russia and China.

It is hardly going to be easy for President Trump to rally the traditional US allies, especially the EU, behind his new digital crypto initiative, considering his anti-European America First stance.

More so, for Africa, the dollar has been the strongest tool that pushes inflation beyond ordinary levels while weakening the per capita income of the people of Africa. Thus, the African opportunity within the BRICS institutions for economic and exchange trade platforms will be more beneficial to African development. The America First policy will push African countries to rally behind the multipolar Global South alliance of the BRICS nations.

The dollar-backed loans to Africa have far-reaching consequences for the continent’s economies, stoking producer import costs and fueling inflation. It will also make debt servicing among many low-income countries much harder, especially dollar-denominated loans payable from weaker local currencies. However, moving in the direction of the BRICS trading system will make Trump’s crypto executive order less appealing and disincentivizing, not just to Africa, but the rest of the world.

“We will tariff and tax foreign countries”

The executive order on tariff and trade from Trump’s America First Trade Policy makes it even harder for weaker African countries to trade with the US. “I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families,” Trump said in his inauguration speech in the US Capitol Rotunda. “Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens.”

Trump also said in his address he would establish a new government office called the External Revenue Service, which will be tasked with collecting tariff revenue.

“It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources,” he declared.

To a layman, this means the more you buy or sell to America, the more you pay. People and nations venture into businesses to make a profit. A situation whereby you have to pay extra to another sovereign state’s external revenue service is strange. However, it remains to be seen how Trump’s ideas will be implemented in practice.

Overall, Trump’s America First policies will push every responsible nation to think of themselves first. Relationships between nations and countries are no longer going to be built on mutual values or respect – but on mutual transactions. To President Trump, everything is transactional.

Africa is not an exception in this regard. African leaders will naturally have to also plan, play, and push an Africa First agenda.

Central Bank Chief Lesetja Kganyago

The South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) Governor Lesetja Kganyago has warned South Africans against the rise of populist leaders and how they pose a threat to central banks.

The governor made these comments while speaking at the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA) event in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Thursday.

“Whether we are talking about rich countries or poorer ones, there is no denying that we are in an age of populism. We need to reflect on why populist ideas have this appeal and how we can respond,” Kganyago said.

He noted that populism was only seen in developing countries, but we are now seeing populism in mature democracies like the US.

Populism has risen in Western nations, “especially since 2016”, he said, noting the surprise outcomes of the Brexit referendum that saw the UK exit from the European Union and the recent US election that brought Donald Trump back into the White House.

He then focused on institutions like central banks and said that populist countries have hostility towards these vital institutions.

“But my focus today is on institutions. Populists have long been defined, in part, by their hostility towards institutions. The standard attack is that existing institutions are controlled by elites, who treat ordinary people with contempt and ignore their interests,” Kganyago explained.

”Populist leaders also typically promise to wage war on institutions, to clean out what they claim as the corrupt intermediaries so that they can take charge themselves. Unfortunately, when populists come into power, they usually fare badly,” he added.

The governor said that it is hard to run a modern country without help and technical expertise and it is hard to stay honest without the necessary checks and balances.

”This is precisely why institutions are established in the first place. Dismantling them typically results in chaos, incompetence and corruption. These adverse outcomes make it easy to condemn populism,” he added.

Kganyago called on world leaders and central bank governors to fight populism.

“The duty we have as leaders of institutions is not only to push back against populist attacks but also to ensure our institutions are above these criticisms,” he added.

Kganyago said that leaders also have a vital role in proactively addressing institutional decay.

“Leaders need to feel the urgency about doing better, and they need to feel it well before the populists show up,” Kganyago advised.

Lastly, he said that in this age of populism, institutions are not going to get the benefit of the doubt.

“They have to perform, and they have to be transparent and communicate effectively.”

‘Balkanization’

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) could breakup if the situation in the eastern part of the country remains unchanged, the African Union warned on Sunday. The rebel group M23 has been on the offensive in the eastern part of the country since the beginning of the year, and has reportedly steadily gained ground. The militants have launched a campaign against the Central African nation’s government and have already killed more than a dozen foreign peacekeepers.

“We don’t want a balkanization of eastern DRC,” the African Union’s peace and security commissioner, Bankole Adeoye, told journalists while attending the organization’s summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “We are calling for the immediate removal of M23 and their supporters from all towns and cities including Goma airport.”

In late January, the rebels seized Goma, a city on the Rwandan border and the capital of DR Congo’s eastern North Kivu province. According to the UN, they have since named their own officials in the region, including a governor and mayor for Goma.

The statement on Sunday came against a background of reports saying that M23 had taken over another major city in the eastern part of DR Congo. Over the weekend, the group seized Bukavu, the capital of the neighboring South Kivu province, according to AFP. Photos on social media purported to show the group controlling the border with Rwanda near Bukavu.

The city, which has around one million inhabitants, was barely defended by the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), AFP said. Its capture reportedly gives M23 control over the Congolese part of Lake Kivu located between DR Congo and Rwanda.
On Saturday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for the DR Congo’s territorial integrity to be respected. “Regional escalation must be avoided at all costs,” he said at the summit in Addis Ababa.

DR Congo claimed that some 4,000 troops from Rwanda were backing the militants. The latter country has denied involement. Last week, spokesperson Yolande Makolo told RT that the Rwandan government is committed to peace and a sustainable resolution to the conflict in the DR Congo.

The former Belgian colony’s resource-rich east has been plagued by decades of violence, with dozens of armed groups, including M23, fighting the local authorities over minerals such as gold and diamonds. At least 2,900 people have been killed and more than 3,000 others injured in the hostilities, according to UN estimates.

Pravind Jugnauth arrested

Former Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has been arrested on charges of money laundering, the East African island country’s Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) announced on Sunday.

The detention came a day after the FCC said its officers were conducting searches at Jugnauth’s home and several other locations. Investigators discovered and seized 114 million Mauritius rupees ($2.4 million) after inspecting various locations, including the former official’s residence, Reuters reported, citing the FCC.

“Mr. Pravind Jugnauth, former Prime Minister, has been arrested under a charge of money laundering. He will be detained at Moka Detention Centre,” the state-owned agency said in a statement on Sunday.

Jugnauth denies the charges, his lawyer, Raouf Gulbul, told reporters early Sunday. In an interview with Bloomberg on Monday, Gulbul said the ex-prime minister was released Sunday night after hours of detention.

“Today he will furnish the bonds set by the court,” the attorney stated.

Jugnauth had been the premier of the Indian Ocean archipelago from 2017 until losing a reelection bid for a second five-year term to the opposition in November. His administration was widely accused of corruption after recordings of politicians and business owners were leaked online days before the election.

Since taking office, the African nation’s new prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, has been critical of the previous government’s handling of the economy. In November, Ramgoolam ordered an audit of the finance ministry, accusing it of providing “wrong” data to “convey a false sense of economic progress.”

Last month, the former governor of the Bank of Mauritius, Harvesh Seegolam, was detained and charged with conspiracy to defraud. He was eventually released on bail after the case was filed in court.

In December, Ramgoolam criticized the central bank for printing money to fund the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC), which the previous administration established in 2020 to support businesses dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a report to parliament, the prime minister described the move as “an irresponsible act,” claiming that it had “deleterious effects on the monetary system, more so that the banking system was already flush with excess liquidity.”

Gold Mine

At least 50 people lost their lives in the collapse of an illegally operated gold mine in western Mali on Saturday, a local official said, speaking to Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The disaster occurred near Kenieba, in the gold-rich Kayes region, an area known for both industrial and artisanal mining activities.

The victims had reportedly ventured into abandoned open-pit mining areas previously used by industrial operators, attempting to extract leftover gold, when the unstable ground suddenly gave way, Taoule Camara, secretary general of the National Union of Gold Counters and Refineries (UCROM), told Reuters.

He confirmed that the collapse occurred between the towns of Kenieba and Dabia but refrained from providing additional details. Ministry officials are currently assessing the scene and preparing a report, Reuters noted.

Conflicting reports on the number of casualties have emerged, with a local police official informing AFP that the death toll had reached 48 by Saturday evening, while an industry union leader told Reuters that 43 fatalities had been confirmed. Later, Xinhua cited a local official as saying that the tragedy claimed the lives of 49 women and one man.

According to the Chinese news agency, the collapse was caused by a Caterpillar machine falling onto an artisanal mine where a group of people were searching for gold. A police source, speaking to AFP, mentioned that some victims had fallen into water-filled pits, including a woman who had a baby strapped to her back. Rescue workers have since recovered the bodies, local sources confirmed to the BBC.

This incident follows a similar tragedy in January when a landslide at a gold mine in southern Mali claimed at least ten lives, with several individuals still missing.

Mali, one of the world’s top gold producers, frequently experiences mining-related accidents due to widespread unregulated operations, where miners often resort to hazardous techniques in their search for gold.

According to AFP, the site where the accident occurred had previously been operated by a Chinese company before being abandoned.

Mali’s industrial gold output saw a sharp decline of 23% last year, dropping to 51 metric tons from 66.5 tons in 2023, according to the country’s Ministry of Mines.

About You

Well, if you heard what my bride said at our wedding reception you'd see some attempt to justify her actions:

Earl B
Earl B:(https://fluffyalbert.blogspot.com/2024/07/prayer-for-all-children.html)

It was our wedding night. She had pressed me on getting married and everything. She felt it would be nostalgic. We set up everything incredibly and traditionally. A great place, bigg guest list, reception and everything. Once we were pronounced man and wife, that's when things changed. During the wedding reception, she got inebriated and boisterous. At our table, I started noticing she was glancing and sort of flirting with one of the best men. I asked her what she was doing, she said just celebrating and having a good time. Next thing you know, she gets up to go do something, says she'll be right back. After about 40 minutes, I started wondering where she was. Seemed all the guests were in their own world and hadn't noticed she wasn't there either. So I got up to go look for her. Next thing you know, I spot her in one of the rooms in the house we rented bumping and grinding on the floor with that best man! Best mann my --s! The bride getting it on with the best man on her own wedding night. I confronted her. She snapped at me as if she was annoyed her husband caught her in an act of infidelity on their wedding night. She retorted "This wedding isn't about you!". Then who's it about? Needless to say, we filed annulment paperwork the next day. Lots of money, wedding gifts and time wasted. Total embarrassment actually!

Let Them Go

Sometimes, we have to let go of people we still want in our lives because we've realized they let go first. Moving on is necessary and eventually, the pain lessens. We start to understand why they did what they did, recognizing that it takes two to tango. We learn that not everyone we meet will stay in our lives forever; some are just passing characters in our story, teaching us lessons and helping us grow. Letting go may be hard, but it's important to accept it, even if we don't want to.

Initially, the pain is intense. We cry ourselves to sleep, our eyes swollen and nose blocked. The pain follows us, triggering memories as we pass familiar places. We question if we ever meant anything to them. But here's the thing: we can't have expectations. The way we love someone doesn't determine how they love us in return. Connections with people don't always mean they're meant for us, and this applies to both friendships and relationships.

The toughest part of losing someone is learning to live without them, especially when we see them moving on without us. It hurts, but we can't blame them. True love means wanting someone to be happy even if it's without us. However, if we don't want them to let go, it becomes a source of concern. Seeking love to fill the void rarely works out; it feels forced and lacks the purity of unexpected connections. Love should come naturally, bringing healing and making the world a less bitter place.

These experiences make us stronger and wiser. We become more aware of how fragile but powerful love can be. We choose more carefully who we allow ourselves to love.

Emergency Summit

French President Emmanuel Macron has called an emergency summit of European leaders after Moscow and Washington agreed to hold Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia, sidelining the EU.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Wednesday, marking their first known direct conversation since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

On Saturday, the countries’ top diplomats followed up with a call to discuss “preparations for a potential high-level Russian-American summit.” Later that day, US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg stated that the EU nations would not be included in the negotiations.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski welcomed Macron’s initiative and confirmed that the summit will take place in France on Monday.

“I’m very glad that President Macron has called our leaders to Paris,” Sikorski said, as quoted by Politico, adding that he expects European leaders to discuss “in a very serious fashion” the challenges posed by Trump.

According to Sikorski, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accepted the invitation and will travel to France next week to “show our strength and unity.”

While the list of invitees was not revealed, The Guardian has reported that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also be attending.

Macron has previously insisted on EU involvement in negotiations, telling the Financial Times that Ukraine must lead discussions on its own sovereignty, but Brussels has a key role in discussing “security guarantees and, more broadly, the security framework for the entire region.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who previously banned his government from engaging in direct negotiations with Putin, admitted that Kiev’s representatives were not invited to discussions in Saudi Arabia either. “Maybe there is something at the table, but not on our table,” he told journalists on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Neither a French government spokesperson nor Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot immediately responded to a request for comment when approached by Politico.
